In seiner jüngeren Geschichte war der Basler Dreispitz über acht Jahrzehnte ein weitgehend unzugängliches Industriegebiet und Zollfreilager. Seit einigen Jahren befindet sich das über fünfzig Hektare grosse Areal im Wandel zum gemischteren Ort der Arbeit, des Lernens, des Kunstschaffens, des Wohnens. Diese Transformation war Gegenstand der künstlerischen Forschung im «Explorers Film Club»: Zwischen Frühjahr 2020 und Herbst 2021 lud der Club vier Künstler*innen/Kollektive ein, im Dreispitz zu residieren, um anschliessend einen neuen Film zu kreieren, der ihre persönliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem Erlebten darstellt.
Der Explorers Film Club umfasste Ausstellungen, Filmvorführungen, Atelierbesuche und Künstler*innengespräche. Am 12. September feiert das Projekt auf dem Dreispitz mit der Eröffnung der umfassenden Abschlussausstellung in der neuen, 1’000 m2 grossen «TransBona-Halle» der Christoph Merian Stiftung seinen vorläufigen Höhepunkt. Wir servieren ein Fingerfood-Festessen und alle Künstler*innen sind anwesend. Eine Publikation erscheint im Laufe der Ausstellungsdauer.

In its recent history, Basel's Dreispitz was a largely inaccessible industrial area and duty-free storage facility for over eight decades. For some years now, the area, which covers more than fifty hectares, has been undergoing a transformation into a more mixed place for working, learning, creating art, and living. This transformation is the subject of artistic research in the «Explorers Film Club»: between spring 2020 and fall 2021, the club invited four artist/collectives to reside in the Dreispitz to subsequently create a new film that represents their personal exploration of what they experienced.
The Explorers Film Club included exhibitions, film screenings, studio visits, and artist talks. On September 12, the project will celebrate its preliminary climax with the opening of the comprehensive exhibition in the Christoph Merian Stiftung's new 1,000 m2 «TransBona-Halle" on the Dreispitz. We will serve a culinary feast and all artists will be present. A publication will be released during the duration of the exhibition

Pre-premiere «The Missing Fly of Dreispitz»

Das Gemeinschaftsprojekt einer bildenden Künstlerin und eines Filmemachers aus dem Süden Chiles springt zwischen Interviews und künstlerischer Fiktionalisierung hin und her: eine pseudo-realistische, satirische Doku mit Laien-darsteller*innen. Der Film handelt vom fiktiven chilenischen Entomologen Carlos Vasquez, der als einer der ersten Forscher den Rückgang der Bienenpopulation vorhersagte, und dann behauptete, dass Fliegen die Bienen bei der Bestäubung ablösen werden. Ende der 80er-Jahre reiste Vasquez in den Basler Dreispitz, wo er ideale Bedingungen für seine Experimente vorfand. Dank Manipulationen für schnellere Ergebnisse gelang es ihm, eine neue Fliegenart (Muscidae Dreispitzii, Vasquez 1990) zu entwickeln, die sich als extrem gross und widerstandsfähig erwies und eine Länge von bis zu 80 cm erreichte. Die Situation geriet ausser Kontrolle und löste in der Region Panik aus. 25 Jahre später beschliessen junge chilenische Entomologen, das einzige erhaltene Exemplar der Muscidae Dreispitzii in Chile zu stehlen. Dessen Sezierung motiviert eine Fortsetzung der Suche in der Schweiz – nach dem verschwundenen chilenischen Entomologen.

«The Missing Fly of Dreispitz», a joint project between a filmmaker and a visual artist from the south of Chile, jumps between traditional interviews to artistic fictionalisation. It all results in an pseudo realistic satirical docu filled with amateur actors. The film is about the fictional Chilean entomologist Carlos Vasquez, who claimed that flies would succeed bees in the task of pollination, predicting the decline of the bee population when the issue was still in its incipient stage. In the late 1980s, Vasquez travelled to the Dreispitz neighborhood, where he found ideal conditions for his experiments. By manipulating results in order to obtain quicker results, he managed to develop a new species of fly (Muscidae Dreispitzii, Vasquez 1990), that turned out to be extremely large and resistant, reaching lengths of up to 80 cm. The situation spiralled out of control and caused panic throughout the neighborhoods of the Swiss city. Twenty-five years later, young Chilean entomologists decide to steal the only preserved specimen of the Muscidae Dreispitzii in Chile. Its dissection motivates a continuation of the search in Switzerland – for the disappeared Chilean entomologist.

Diese Transformation ist Gegenstand der künstlerischen Forschung im Explorers Film Club: Zwischen Frühjahr 2020 und Sommer 2021 laden wir fünf Künstler*innen ein, je einen Monat im Dreispitz zu leben, um später an einem Ort ihrer Wahl einen neuen Film zu präsentieren, der ihre persönliche, freie Aus- einandersetzung mit dem Erlebten darstellt. Den Anfang machte Puck Verkade mit Cursed im Club Elysia.
